ICCSD Releases Comprehensive DEI Plan

On December 10, the Iowa City Community School District released its Comprehensive Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Action Plan, 2019-2022. The Plan, which seeks to address the inequities that arise in many different facets of the K-12 system, was co-constructed through an inclusive engagement process that began with the drafting of a Comprehensive Equity Plan in 2014-15.

ICCSD and the Equity Implemented Partnership release 2019 school climate survey report

The Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) and the Equity Implemented Partnership released a report on Tuesday, June 11 that describes student experiences of school climate in the District’s schools. The report details results from a survey administered to all 5th through 12th grade students in the ICCSD in February 2019 as well as trends in student experiences from 2016.

The American Educational Research Association (AERA), a national research society, strives to advance knowledge about education, to encourage scholarly inquiry related to education, and to promote the use of research to improve education and serve the public good. This year, as part of the AERA Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop, undergraduate fellows presented their research in a poster presentation format.

In early April, Jocelyn Roof, Nicole Nucaro, and Zoe Swinton represented the University--and the Equity Implemented Partnership--at the annual Research in the Capitol event at the Statehouse in Des Moines.

Teacher Diversity in Iowa City Schools

At the November 27th meeting of the Iowa City Community School Board, Equity Implemented Director Sarah Bruch presented a two-year progress report on the core recommendations outlined in the 2016-17 Multi-Stakeholder School Climate Task Force Report on District staff, teachers, and administrators of diverse backgrounds. The Iowa City Press-Citizen followed up with two stories on affirmative hiring.  The first, "The Iowa City student body is quickly becoming more diverse. Teachers, not so much," noted slow progress District-wide; the second, focussed on Kirkwood Elementary, examines a successful example within the district: "The One Elementary School Bucking the Trend and Hiring More Teachers of Color."

Iowa City and UI partnership looks to grow with new Equity Implemented Project

A partnership between the University of Iowa and the Iowa City Community School District will bridge the gap between research and practice to combat inequity in the district.

Equity Implemented Interns Present at Summer Research Conference

Six summer interns in the Equity Implemented Partnership with the Iowa City Schools showcased their research July 25th at 13th annual UI Summer Undergraduate Research Conference.  The conference is a culmination of the students' summer undergraduate research experiences at the UI.  Since participants present their work to the university research community, the event serves as an important professional development opportunity for students preparing for careers in research, policy or practice.
